Wetlands

The agreement on the Action Plan for the Aquatic Environment II from 1998 was established to reduce the loss of nitrogen to the aquatic environment.

One of the instruments in this agreement was to restore wetlands. One of the properties of wetlands is that through naturally-occurring bacteria they can convert nitrates into harmless gaseous nitrogen. At the same time, projects can help improve conditions for nature.

It takes time to complete the projects, and this is why not all projects were completed by the end of 2003 when the Action Plan for the Aquatic Environment II expired. Therefore it was decided to continue the activities under the Action Plan for the Aquatic Environment III, to make it possible to complete more projects.
